Open Sky offers a full schedule of classes in two martial arts: traditional aikido for adults and teens, Aikido for kids ages 7 to 13,  and Chen-style tai chi classes for young adults through seniors.

Prospective new students or parents of students are always welcome to watch any class – please see our dojo schedule for times and visiting etiquette. Families are welcome: we have a play room for younger children to enjoy themselves while waiting for their siblings, and many parents watch class from the side of the mat.

Our chief instructor, Steve Kaufmann, Shihan (master teacher), is a 6th degree black belt in aikido and long-time student of tai chi, with over 40 years of practice and teaching. Open Sky is an official member dojo of the United States Aikido Federation, and hosts seminars with top USAF instructors each year. Both Steve & Jesse Kaufmann are tai chi students of Chen-style tai chi Grand Master Wang Hai Jun, and host semi-annual seminars with him at Open Sky.

Location: Open Sky is located in the Triangle region of North Carolina, an easy drive from Durham, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Mebane, and Efland. We are just minutes from exits on I-85 and I-40, just off Churton street, in historic Hillsborough, NC. Please see our contact page for driving directions.
